No es broma cuando decimos que somos el lugar perfecto para los muebles de la abuela. Es verdad que trabajamos con piezas especiales de colección, o con muebles con un sinfín de historias detrás, pero clientes buscando modernizar las mesas, vitrinas, camas o sillas que los han acompañado durante su infancia, han llegado a las puertas del taller desde que empezamos con esta aventura.
María José y Gustavo son uno de estos clientes. De la madre de María José heredaron una vitrina, un comedor con sillas, un par de cabeceros, un espejo, un arcón, una cómoda y tres mesitas de noche. Estaban seguros que querían conservar las piezas pero no de cómo, ni en que estilo. Es decir, nos dieron carta abierta para crear… más no podíamos pedir.
It is definitely not a joke when we say La Retrovisora is the perfect place for Grandma´s furniture. It is true that we work with a collection of pieces and with furniture that has a wide variety of stories behind them. Since we started this adventure, clients have come through our doors looking to update tables, cabinets, beds or chairs that have been part of their childhood.
María José and Gustavo are part of this group of clients. They inherited from María José’s mom: a cabinet, a dining table with its chairs, a pair of headboards, a mirror, a wooden chest, a cupboard and three night tables. Given the rich family history and memories in each of these pieces, they most certainly wanted to keep these items but they wanted to revamp them to fit with their current style but had no idea what to do, so they gave us total freedom to create! What more could we ask for!
La vitrina es de los años 70s, de buena manufactura pero no de madera sino aglomerado. Nos centramos en conservar las formas rectangulares de la estructura y eliminar los detalles tallados. Al quitar las puertas con los cristales tall y la decoración que la hacía ver desactualizada, la vitrina se convirtió en un lienzo perfecto para una pieza moderna.
The cabinet is from the 70s, well made but not from solid wood but plywood. We focused on keeping the rectangular forms from the structure and discarded the carved details. Taking away the door, the embossed glass and all the decorative details that made it look outdated, the cabinet changed to a perfect canvas for a modern piece.
Contemplamos varias posibilidades para las patas de la vitrina, diferentes estilos pero al final optamos por unas de hierro en horquilla que no llamaran la atención y dieron un toque antiguo sin ser muy pesado.
We discussed many possibilities for the cabinet´s legs, different styles and materials. We opted for an iron structure that would give an antique feel without being to overpowering.
El color preferido de nuestros clientes es el malva, por lo que lo usamos para resaltar los espacios de la vitrina y creamos una mezcla de tonos que complementaran con este color y con el gris azulado predominante.
Our client’s favorite color is mauve so we decided to use it to highlight the spaces inside the cabinet. We created a mix of tones to complement the mauve and the blue-grey used.
En la zona del bar chapamos con roble claro, material que también utilizamos para la mesa del comedor.
In the bar section we plated it with a light oak, which was the same material we used on the dining table.
Para crear armonía en el espacio, también pintamos las patas de la mesa del comedor, del mismo gris azulado de la vitrina. El gris y el roble le dan un toque delicado que contrasta con la densidad de las patas.
To create an harmonious space, we also painted the legs of the dining table with the same greyish blue from the cabinet. The grey and oak give the table a delicate touch that softened the density of the table’s legs.
Al ser el aparador una pieza grande y sólida, pensamos utilizar el mismo contraste que en la mesa del comedor, pero luego de ver los resultados del malva en la vitrina, nos decidimos por este color sin contrastes y aminorando los detalles de los repujados. Dejándolo así más limpio.
We thought about using the same color combination for the cupboard to again, soften it, but after seeing how the mauve worked on the cabinet we went with a full mauve paint. No contrasts. We also took away some of the flowery details to make the piece more clean.
Conservamos los pomos de bronce con cerámicas valencianas antiguas, el accesorio perfecto para el aparador en malva.
We kept the antique knobs made of bronze and Valencian tiles that complemented extremely well with the new color.
Las tres piezas juntas se complementan, dando un aire de antigüedad pero con un estilo moderno.
The three pieces went very well together and gave the piece and antique feel with a modern twist.

Las sillas del comedor eran originalmente de rejilla oscura que desentonaban con los tonos de la mesa por lo que optamos por cambiar la rejilla por una más clara y pintar la madera del gris de la mesa. Una combinación delicada para dar flexibilidad a cualquier tapizado ahora y en el futuro.
The dining chairs were originally dark rattan that didn’t go well with the table so we decided to lighten the colour and paint the chairs in the same grey as the table. A soft combination for any kind of fabric to upholster now and in the future.
For the client’s present needs, leatherette was the chosen material for its endurance and we choose a dark blue.
Para las necesidades de los clientes actuales, el polipiel resistente era lo más indicado y nos decantamos por azul oscuro.
El arcón de madera es la única de todas las piezas que recibió una restauración clásica, quitándole el barniz oscuro. Como el propósito de este arcón era ir en la entrada, lo combinamos con el espejo de un aparador del que sólo conservamos esta pieza. El espejo también fue restaurado y pintado.
The wooden chest is the only piece where we did a classic cleaning and restoration, taking away all the dark varnish it had. The chest was meant for the entrance of the home, so we complemented it with a mirror from a different cabinet. The mirror was again restored and painted.
Para la habitación de la hija de María y José y Gustavo, restauramos y pintamos uno de los cabeceros y una de las mesitas de noche. Utilizamos un color rosa empolvado que le da durabilidad al estilo sin hacerlo muy infantil, además de ser una buena base para combinar con otros colores.
For their daughter´s room, we cleaned, restored and painted one of the headboards and one of the nightstands. We used a dusty pink color to give the style longevity and maturity. It is a perfect base tone that allows us to play around with other colors to decorate.
The other headboard was restored and painted. This time we decided to keep the original rattan.
El otro cabecero de madera, lo restauramos y pintamos, conservando la rejilla original.
Cada pieza tiene su encanto y juntas crearon espacios armoniosos. Nosotros disfrutamos de la libertad y confianza que nos dieron nuestros clientes y ellos están felices con los resultados.
Each piece has its own personality but together they make a very harmonious space. We enjoyed the creativity and freedom given by our clients and they were happy they trusted us. Win Win!
